Chapter 12 – Adoption

Chapter 12 – Adoption

1. God has granted that all those who are justified would receive the grace of adoption, in and for the sake of his only Son Jesus Christ. (1) By this they are counted among the children of God and enjoy the freedom and privileges of that relationship. (2) They inherit his name, (3) receive the spirit of adoption, (4) have access to the throne of grace with boldness, and are enabled to cry “Abba, Father!” (5) They are given compassion, (6) protected, (7) provided for, (8) and chastened by him as a father. (9)  Yet they are never cast off (10) but are sealed for the day of redemption (11) and inherit the promises as heirs of everlasting salvation. (12)

11/16/2025 Chap.12, Subject-Adoption (12.1)

Prolegomena:
Holy God, Great and Mighty, all Knowing, all Powerful, all Merciful and Righteous: You predestined a people, and through Christ, according to the purpose of your will, adopted them into your home. In the fullness of time, you sent your Son, unlike—yet like us all, born of a woman, and under the law. Sent to perfect, and satisfy all things, He brings us as sons and daughters, into the house of God.

He glorifies those who suffer with Him. To those who receive Him and trust in Him, He grants the right to become children of God. Belonging to Him, we become fellow heirs with Him. In kindness, care, and fellowship, our God and His, adopts us out of poverty into riches. For Almighty God our Father, ruler of the universe, does all that He pleases.

In Christ, we are more than conquerors. We have become the pillars of God’s temple, with His name written upon us. He forms us into the City of God—His New Jerusalem, come down from heaven. He makes the weak and broken—forever strong and whole. In the Spirit of His Son, God gives us the heart of freedom and courage; a spirit like Christ Himself, whose name is above all names. For His glory, the Father has formed us into His own children; and in one Spirit has adopted us, and given us the right of entry. So, in confidence, reverence, and joy, we cry out, “Abba! Father!” For His compassion is our refuge.

If we go against His ways, His anger justly flows down to us; He hides his face from us, and we see our error against Him. Though a bleak and weary thing, we remember: He will not cast us off forever; He is our redeemer; His love is steadfast and everlasting, and His kindness brings us back out of sorrow. His rebukes are severe, but He continually works to heal and restore, to bid again: “come, follow, rest.”

As a father who disciplines His children in love, He is always working to secure and preserve us for the day of our deliverance. So, let us not grieve His Holy Spirit, those who minister to us, and those who oversee our salvation and inheritance; but be swift to obey, to be patient with each other, and to do all that the Lord commands. For He has promised us Himself; He is the inheritance of life everlasting.

Homologeo:
O’Father—we confess the perfections of Christ. For His sake, you justified and adopted us. For His joy and ours; for freedom, and for life, you gave Him to us, and us to Him. In approval you give us His name, that His inheritance would be ours as well. So, we approach you crying out Abba—Father!

You enfold us with compassion, provision and protection on all sides. Because you love us, you scold us for our good. You will never discard your little ones; but watch over us and shelter us until the day of our rescue. In you, every promise proves true. Our inheritance of peace and everlasting life is in you.

In everything, thanks be to you, O’God in Christ, amen.
